Conscious of the shortcomings that are all too common in programmes of assistance without follow-through, the approach of “Entraide Médicale Internationale” (EMI) is a global, lasting approach in public health, to improve medical care delivered to people in the developing countries, while raising their economic and social conditions, educational opportunities, and access to clean water.
Apart from the re rehabilitation of health care facilities, the association concentrates its efforts on healthcare training and prevention, the foundation on which healthcare services are built.
Its mission is a long-term project, either at the request of the local authorities or organised communities, in particular, groups of women, and with active participation, the only guarantor of success.
A programme is carried out over 2 to 4 years, and its role is to reinforce each level of the health pyramid :
• The base : village healthcare stations, with set up of programmes of primary care.
• The intermediate level : dispensaries, centres for Protection of Mothers and children,
• The apex : a hospital structure of reference (Province or District) with training of all staff.
At the end of the programme, EMI volunteers hand over the job for continuing activity by native people, structures and methods set up..
With lasting and autonomous development that is ahead of its time, EMI now has over 40 years’ experience in Africa and Asia of setting up many such Pyramids of Development.
